Hello and welcome to Stacks testing grounds!
Today were going to test one of the best mobile offers out there right now. The Whatsapp wallpaper offers!
Whys it one of the best offers right now?
– Its converting like hotcakes
– Its converting great in over 10 countries
– Its all based on subscription offers so the offers are consistent and stable
– Lots of networks and advertisers surround these offers, so theyre not going anywhere.
– Everyone uses whatsapp
Heres a bunch of pages i want to put to the test! Ive tested these pages in different countries/banners, but its been pretty messy and havent found a clear winner yet Theres more elements to add to each page, but ive tested it against the winning countdown page youve see while spying and a lot have outright beat it.
Lets test these pages together
My method for testing is probably somewhat different then others. I write a massive list of angles/copy/landing page ideas, then mock them up in photoshop in the simplest way. I then mass test and take the winners and spice up the pages a bit to make them look a bit better. The pages you see below are at this stage!
I test these prettier pages which are usually basic html. Once i find a few top winners, i integrate things like calling out phones, split testing specific images, adding maps, new icons etc..
I tend to put the most focus into landing pages, then banners and targeting. I find banners and targeting harder to separate myself from the competition, but the right landing page can put me far ahead of my competitors.
Some of these pages focus on battery loss, virus, local girls, etc.. All things that have worked in other mobile niches before. Thats where i like to start when coming up with angles
Notice: These pages are often non-compliant with a lot of countries. Check with your AM!
The goal of this experiment?
To figure out which of these pages convert the best with pop traffic.
Ill be targeting Mexico, which page do you predict will get the highest conversion rate?!
Those are working pretty good even on adult traffic, but they are also getting banned in some networks.
As for conversion, I’d say landings 8 and 9 in general and 4 and 7 look good for adult, but for Mexico you’ll need them in Spanish and replacing the map and girls locations.
Landing 1 I don’t like at all (now waiting for it to be the best one and leaving me with stupid face )
I heard these offers are hot like hell and I tried them too.
The angles I used:
– Whatsapp Update Needed
– ‘Random hot girl’ wants to chat with you!
– Get the latest whatsapp wallpapers
I didn’t get a lot conversions.. traffic was also not widely available.
Tested them on:
– Decisive (difficult to get aproved)
Problems I had:
– Most mexico offers only accept telcel. And there is almost no traffic available for it on the mentioned sources.
What worked best:
– Chat with hot girl had the highest LP CTR
– Whatsapp update needed was the only one with a few conversions
My guess: LP9 will be the best. It looks legit, it’s the ‘update needed’ angle and everybody hates battery issues.
As with all offers slowly affiliate networks become more compliant and traffic networks get angry pubs who don’t want to be associated with specific ads. Doesn’t stop the best from making $xx,xxx/day from it. It’s all about adapting.
Note: For this test i’ll be doing mainstream pops.
stackman, can you give me the phone number of Sonia_24 plz? (subscribed!)
How did you make those landers? Muse? Any other tips to make something similiar? They look good!
LP1 will win. Periode.
Forgive my ignorance. What is mainstream pops? Is there a certain network that offers these types of ads? I feel really stupid asking this.
Damn this is a hard one, great pages though super nice and clean!
1 is definitely aggressive, thats why I won’t put that off the list of high converting. I like 8/9 as well, it’ll be interesting to see if Black vs White does best.
Looking forward to the results
Is there a list of pop up pop under networks we can all refer to? The 2 lists I saw in stm were mostly taking banner ads or other forms of ads.
seconded. very nice looking
sexy landers, id love to see a split test of sexy vs ugly though
I would also say either 1 or 8.
Even though 2-5 mimic the offer page quite nice so it will be a nice test.
This post is definitely hot . For me basically, all the landers are good but we definitely know some will perform better than the others. If the target is for Adult I sure believe 7. is the best for this, it sure mimic whatsapp download page though with a different content, It will surely convert more. But if this offer is not on adult traffic then I believe LP 1. and LP 2. is the best for this, as LP 1. uses the urgency method to attract people’s attention and LP 2. is sure good replica of whatsapp. So my top is LP 7, LP 1 and LP 2 in that order.
Threads like this remind me why I fail at affiliate marketing.
I’m definitely too shy.
Thank you very much for giving a concrete example on how things work in this industry.
Yeah it is really deceptive marketing…
I wonder if all affiliate marketing is like this.
Let me clear things up for you:
All affiliate marketing is not like this. Fact.
You don’t need to be deceptive to make things work. Fact.
^^ Agree with Mr Green, all affiliate marketing isn’t like this (thankfully).
These types of offers really show the worst of the industry. I’m not sure the word "deceptive" is strong enough for when a user is tricked into thinking their handset system is telling them they aren’t receiving messages, and then scared into paying for a monthly subscription service for some smileys or a background that they never needed or wanted in the first place.
I’m not having a go at anyone who runs these offers – I’m more than aware that it’s almost impossible to run Whatsapp PINs without being ultra aggressive, but I’m hoping that beginners don’t think this is what affiliate marketing is. There’s a big difference between creativity and just lying.
Note that I was not judging if it’s ‘bad’ or ‘good’ actually, I don’t mind to trick people like that
It’s just an eye-opener when I compare creatives like this and the ones I make on my end without spying/inspiration.
Nice case study man!
I would bet on #1, update us with some juicy numbers now.
sad day for my whatsapp campaigns lol, good day for STM’ers. Golden thread, looking forward to the results.
In! Creatives look purdy man.
But is this a Whatsapp Wallpaper offer? I don’t see an aff network/advertiser approving these in MX. Its a pretty volatile and regulated market.
Excited to see the results
Great to see the landers!
1 & 8 >> very nice
Thanks! Just photoshop (been using it for a long time), then sliced and diced.
Mobile popups on mainstream traffic. Very similar to web. 1 traffic source example is Exoclick.. i know it’s known for Adult but Exo has mainstream pops and redirects on torrent sites.
Absolutely. I will take the winning landing page and have it challenge off against the same style page thats brutally ugly.
I’m not going to beat around the bush.. It’s deceptive.
A lot of affiliate marketing is.. think about the niches like enlargement or the massive adult dating industry right now..
It’s not the only way though like a few here have mentioned.
1/6/8/9 are great angles/landers and i’m interested to see what kind of performance they provide.
awesome idea for a case study!
You mentioned that you made these landing pages in photoshop and are going to slice and export them to html. Is this just what method you use for initial testing so you can try many different styles quickly or even when you find a winner will you continue to use the sliced up version?
The reason i ask is because they would be much smaller if done in html/css. The background of lp2 for example could be a small repeated image. Just curious! Thanks
You just have your landing page consist of images diced up? How do you make it load as fast as possible?
jordan – any update here?
I send them off to my programmer, he does some magic so they load fast. I’m sure Zeno, Caurmen or BBrock can chime in here with some tips on how to keep the file sizes down to a mimimum. Caurmen explains it in his mobile landing page guide!
>> MY THOUGHTS
– "Not receiving all your messages" and "friend related viruses" are the best angles.
– I think the ‘battery’ related angle could use a better page
– All the pages could be more interactive.. (ex: battery draining scanner etc…)
– Pages can match the winning offer ..not always the best option, but often the best option
– Large demo I’m targeting are girls who don’t want to "start chatting" with other girls (so girl angles are out!.. unless i’m targeting adult)
– Lots of room to improve above!
What would you change/edit/add now that you see the results?
it’s very cool to see the results!
definitely add a scanner or progress bar of some sort that heightens the urgency.
also test entry alerts, auto timed meta refresh (so no click is necessary).
I’d also switch out the "new update" banner on the battery issue LP to something with more urgency like "urgent update" or "required update"
how much do these pages weigh? I imagine they’re heavy if they’re just sliced up images, so do any optimizations to deal with that (zepto, image optimization, embedded js/cs, render buttons in css3 instead of actual images).
you said your programmer does this stuff, so maybe not necessary.
In the end, your programmer converts the image to HTML/CSS though, right?…or you are using an image as a pop?
BTW, Thanks for posting such an amazing post! This really gets my thinking about how many sub-angles there are under each angle and gives me a lot of ideas.
Those white pages are bad ass, thanks for the results stackdaddy
Split your pretty pages vs ugly ones and lets see results
Those are some pretty awesome results, thanks for sharing! That’s kind of how I expected the numbers to go, the fear of virus is probably greater than desire for chatting.
Damn that shows again you cant really predict the results, I would have picked the error one but that would have been totally wrong. So the lesson, dont assume anything, split test always and let the data decide.
hi Stackman and co – for the newbies here like myself, I have some questions.
ultimately speaking what sort of scope do you think there is with this over the lifetime of the campaign in terms of conversions.
A) could you see this campaign delivering say 1000 conversions?
b)also when looking at this data, what sort of overall ROI would you look at in the campaign.
C) how much would you have to spend on this campaign before it turned breakeven/positive ROI.
I guess for me C is the question that I am not sure on overall in terms of IM, whilst I appreciate this is a specific campaign and each campaign to their own, in this case at what point would you have called it quits? $100 in, $1k in etc…
any thoughts would be great, thanks
Cutting down image sizes – the key thing with a sliced image is to optimise each slice separately in Photoshop’s Save For Web.
It’s a bit of a pain in the ass, but will significantly reduce the eventual filesize, particularly if you choose appropriate file types for each slice based on what’s in them.
When looking at the result it would be interesting to know how many impressions each landing page got and what the conversion rates were. I am assuming you sent an equal amount of traffic to each lander, but it would still be nice to see some more stats other then conversions only.
I pre-tested some entry alerts and didn’t notice a concrete increase or not. I tried some of the same pages (just copy) as java-only too with a worse conversion rate (previously).
Get me an example of 1 of the top converting pages, show me how ugly you’re talking!
A) Absolutely! WAY WAY WAY more then 1000 conversions. 1000/day would be doable, and then you can expand to other countries as well.
B) I’m not sure what you mean. For this campaign i didn’t profit, but with some tweaks to the main peages and narrowing down the tracking it wouldn’t be too hard. As for ROI i look for, completely depends on the spend. I’ll be happy with 20% ROI on $10,0000/day spend.
C) I think i could spend another $500 and i would start seeing some profit around 30% – 60% ROI
Learning when to call quits is a mix of experience, intuition and math. There’s no exact answer. It depends on how many variables you have, and how good your banners/angles/landing pages are.
Amazing thanks stackman.
its incredible to think the scope of it, 1000 conversions a day is nuts (although I am newish to this)! re B I just wasn’t so clear but your answers in B/C address what I was getting at.
I guess that’s why you advise that you go into AM with minimum $1k as that is going to give you a very small indication of what will and what won’t work, or at the very least show you statistically at least 1 campaign that is going to work.
Really motivating, thanks a lot!
great thread, will watch closely. I also need to learn more about using PS to slice html landers as others have mentioned. The landers look really clean.
Thanks for sharing stacks, I previously tried DL this campaign when I was 1 week in am, so this shows me in great contrast what it takes here 😛
If you want to share:nHow do you handle the fact this is non-compliant for the advertiser? High risk of not getting paid I think..
I don’t usually continue my campaign for things this non-compliant. It really depends on the advertiser, and if i consider them "high-risk".
I like to test a bunch of ideas, and then if the advertiser is picky and very "on-top" of the people advertising their products, then i take the winning non-compliant idea and do my best to make it compliant.
Very nice designs dude. All the LP’s look very crisp
The one thing that struck me was that you use so much text on each lander. I’d try a shorter more shaved version of your best one. Just write something along the lines with:
"Warning: Update Your WhatsApp Now!
Your <brand> is in need of an urgent WhatsApp update.
You have <timer> seconds to submit your mobile PIN and install the latest version of WhatsApp.
