Feel free to skip through the long exposition if you wish!
I got involved in online marketing roughly a year ago when I took a job marketing a fashion newsletter to women in China. It was rough going at first – my background is all from the research side of marketing, nothing technical – but over the course of the company’s first 4 months our CPA plummeted and I fell in love with the numbers game. I ended up managing paid acquisition for about a year.
After I quit, I stumbled across affiliate marketing. The concept immediately made sense – at my old job I easily undercut our max budget CPA, and this was just like pocketing the difference! I was still skeptical of the get-rich-quick claims, and I started to get the sense that much of the hype was a ploy for bloggers to make money off of the greedy and uneducated.
Then, I joined STM. To be honest, I was just planning on downloading the tools and then canceling my subscription. Once I joined the forums, though, I couldn’t believe the quality and detail of information here. If the subscription was for the forums alone it’d still be cheap! I’m shocked that something like this even exists.
I’m now 1 week into the business working full-time. The first (and only) campaign I’ve run was a test on TrafficJunky to see how it’d do without detailed optimization. I used a campaign with a pre-made landing page and banners that broke even even with mediocre CTR and CR, so I’m feeling confident that I can make good money with a bit of optimization. Currently doing long hours of research, reading, signing up for traffic and networks, registering and setting up tracking and domains, and setting up a business entity. At this point, I can’t wait to just get started on some real campaigns, but I want to make sure I’ve done due diligence to prepare.
I’m planning on starting to work in adult and adult mobile, mostly, as I have little technical background. I’m also very interested in breaking into a vertical where I can use a squeeze page to create my own mailing lists, since I have a great deal of experience managing email campaigns at my own job and I can see the potential. I’m also curious about using inbound telemarketing in conjunction with mobile squeeze pages. I’d love (love love love) to talk to anyone who has experience in the above!
Feel free to add me on skype or gchat if you want to talk: digilypse
Or let me know if you want to meet up in Manhattan.
Just to add, I’m also very interesting in finding offers that work in the China market, and if anyone wants help getting a PPC account on Baidu let me know.
Welcome to STM!
Wish you the best success with your campaigns.
